    We are all well aware of the multiple benefits that reading brings to our health and happiness. The advantages appear endless; reducing the symptoms of depression, staving off Alzheimer’s and Dementia, improving memory, focus and concentration, widening vocabulary, advancing analytical skills, the list goes on. But what if, despite all these beneficial reasons to read, your pupils are refusing to jump on the reading for pleasure bandwagon? One major point to take into consideration is your offering of books. Are they dated? Are they tatty? And most importantly, have you chosen them for your pupil, or have they chosen the book themselves?

    Comprehension activities for children can be activities they just have to work through.  Solid, worthy, laudable.

    Or they can be so exciting, dynamic and enjoyable that they are the first thing they tell their parents about as they leave school.

    Naturally we spend a lot of time worrying about our struggling readers and what reading material to give them. We endeavour to provide books at the seemingly appropriate ‘interest level’, rather than the reading age, calling these Hi-Lo books (high interest, lower reading age). At the other end of the spectrum, where readers are reading fluently at a younger than expected age or stage, it can be equally challenging. Similarly the problem again lies with what is deemed to be the appropriate ‘interest level’ for the reader’s age and maturity and what is therefore suitable or not-suitable. Only last week, a teacher from Hertfordshire talked to me about her anxiety of choosing books for fluent readers in Year 2, and I understood exactly what she meant. I had the same issue with a child in Reception who could read anything and everything put in front of him. It had benefits – like reading in the Christmas play – but I had nothing suitable in my classroom for him as all of t

    Thinking back to reading as a child myself, I can’t remember the ‘scheme’ I was following exactly or any of the stories I read, but what I can remember is the excitement of choosing a new book and even more so, the feeling of utter elation when moving up to ‘the next colour’. I clearly remember what a good day it was when that coloured sticker changed (particularly if it was metallic!) and I’m sure that children still feel the same way now. It’s obvious – it’s a milestone reached, a reward for trying hard, a sense of achievement and an exciting challenge to be reading harder books.

    Aside from the technical aspects of teaching children to read independently and well, teachers are developing children’s passion and enthusiasm for reading; encouraging children to read frequently and widely, to love literature in all its forms and to become lifelong readers. The government talk widely about teaching children to ‘read for pleasure’ and it is this aspect of reading that fascinates me most. I wonder – is it not ‘in you’ to love or hate reading?
