Enjoy Guided Reading: To Be a Cat Teacher Notes

The Enjoy Guided Reading downloadable Teacher Notes offer a structured yet flexible framework for group guided reading sessions. Group or carousel guided reading involves dividing students into small, ability-based groups that rotate through a variety of reading activities. Differentiated titles are available for Accessible, Expected, and Confident reading levels across each year group, providing appropriately levelled texts to ensure all students can actively engage and benefit. While one group works directly with the teacher, others participate in independent or collaborative tasks, such as comprehension exercises, or silent reading.

This resource can be used flexibly to accommodate variations in class size, the number of supporting adults, and school policies. After the teacher-led introductory session, students may read the remainder of the book independently and complete set questions. For longer novels, teachers or teaching assistants could periodically work with the children before they complete the book, monitoring the quality of their independent work, modelling high-quality answers, or discussing their responses to set questions verbally. Photocopiable activities can also be used for independent group work, as extensions for faster readers, or as homework tasks.
