Badger GCSE Science Working Scientifically: Chemistry

Dr Andrew Chandler-Grevatt & Dr Deborah Shah-Smith

GCSE Working Scientifically: Chemistry from Badger Science is suitable for use in all schools, whichever exam board they use, with the activities working well as an 'add on' to any of the KS4 programmes of study The activities have been created by teachers to give colleagues a range of resources to use in teaching GCSE Chemistry through the Working Scientifically principles.

One of a series of three, GCSE Working Scientifically: Chemistry features over 60 information sheets and activities designed to improve knowledge and understanding of Working Scientifically. Acting as a vital tool to inspire discussion, these science resources also help learners consider a range of viewpoints and make informed decisions.

The activities encourage an understanding of Chemistry in the classroom, with most tasks having differentiation suggestions for mixed ability. When lacking background knowledge about scientific issues, many students find it difficult discussing the issues and forming an opinion. The GCSE Working Scientifically: Chemistry activities enhance background knowledge and help learners to consider evidence from a range of contexts and make a decision.

The activities take a range of forms to help focus the students on the nature of evidence or facts in the context of the activity to encourage discussion. Each activity also provides a useful time indicator to help effectively plan lessons and homework tasks. Activities include: data analysis, graph drawing, predicting activities and card sorts.
