50 Recommended Reads for Year 5
Curating classroom libraries, or a book-led curriculum, to provide books that excite and engage readers, promote reading fluency, encourage a wider use of language and vocabulary, stimulate imaginations, and introduce big ideas supports a reading culture that ultimately increases access to learning through the wider curriculum. Our 50 Recommended Reads range is designed to help you meet this need across your school and this collection is carefully balanced to include highlights for the year, classics, diverse characters, high-quality titles for promoting reading for pleasure, perfect class reads, poetry, graphic novels and exceptional non-fiction texts, all perfectly pitched for Year 5.
Creating a reading culture is multi-layered and starts with steering children towards the right books and encouraging them to put in the reading miles as the Reading Framework 2023 brings home. Teachers are asked to curate their classroom library or book-led curriculum to give pupils the best chance of reading quality books that in turn give children the fluency, vocabulary, imagination, big ideas and most importantly access to learning through the wider curriculum.
Selected by our team of experienced book experts, who collectively have over 25 years’ experience of choosing books for schools, classrooms and libraries, within our first 50 Recommended Reads there is a range of book types and genres; award-winners and tested favourites; highlights from the most recently published; all-time must-read classics; engaging non-fiction books; poetry and graphic novels. From rich lyrical writing to fun page-turners, these mostly longer reads for older readers, will be a great foundation on which to build.
With emphasis on children of this age being read to daily – this pack has some excellent examples of the perfect books to read aloud to a Year 5 class.
