5 fun ways to get children eggcited about reading over the Easter holiday

1  Easter Reading Bingo

Encourage your child/ren to complete as many Easter Reading Bingo activities as possible. Can they set themselves a challenge to complete a row, column or even a full house?

2  Easter Egg Hunt

An Easter egg hunt is the perfect opportunity to encourage reading and is also a great way to keep child/ren busy over the holiday! Hide small chocolate eggs (or any other small edible treat) around your home and then write out clues to help your child/ren find where they are. For example, “I am going to get wet hiding here!” — might indicate a sink, bath or shower.

3  Scrambled Eggs

Write letters onto egg shaped pieces of paper of card, (you could cut up cereal boxes and write on the inside.) These letters should spell a word or message, eg ‘H a p p y  E a s t e r’. Hide the eggs around a room for your child/ren to find and unscramble. Or, use our Scrambled Eggs activity sheet.

4  Easter Baking

Easter is a time for treating yourself to some chocolate so why not embrace this fully by following some delicious recipes to delight your taste buds and encourage reading. Whether it’s hot cross buns, homemade bread or chocolate cake, this activity is sure to be a fun and tasty way for the whole family to read together. Why not have a go at making Billy Badger’s Chocolate Easter Nest Cakes?

5  Easter Bookmark

Encourage your child/ren to colour an egg on their Easter Bookmark each time they read a book over the Easter holiday. This challenge can be easily adapted for all ages and abilities. For example, colour one egg after a short ten-minute session where you’ve shared a book together or colour the egg after a whole book has been read.
